Scholarships for African Students

Top tips for scholarship applications

  • I previously maintained my own list of scholarships, but this has been superseded by the resources on the left, which are more regularly updated

  • Most scholarships are narrowly restricted to specific fields of study, levels of study (MA/PhD), and universities. There are almost no scholarships which offer fully flexible funding that you can access after you’ve been accepted to a programme, so you have to plan ahead to identify relevant scholarships.

  • When you’re applying to a specific university, contact the financial aid office and ask about the scholarships that are available before you submit your application

  • If you’re accepted to a great programme without a scholarship, speak to the financial aid office, your faculty mentor, and other current graduate students to identify potential funding options which are specific to that university

  • Do not take out loans for American MA or PhD programmes. They’re incredibly expensive and it will be very difficult to pay them back. European graduate programmes have much more affordable tuition.
